Teaching Programs
For those unfamiliar with Russian folk instruments, or others who want to improve their technique and learn more about proper playing, instruction is offered at levels from beginner through advanced. "Loaner" instruments, when available, allow the interested player to begin lessons before acquiring an instrument. In addition to balalaika and domra, we teach bayan, guitar and piano. All lessons are taught in McLean or Falls Church, Virginia except as otherwise agreed.
Our instructors teach other instruments as well ...

THE WBS MUSIC ACADEMY
The Washington Balalaika Society launched the Music Academy in February of 2009 as part of its 20th Anniversary celebration. This is an exciting opportunity for all adults and children, ages 5 and up, to learn to play Russian folk instruments such as the balalaika, domra, bayan, guitar and related folk wind and percussion instruments. Rental instruments are available.
The academy is directed by WBS Conductor, Svetlana Nikonova, who is an honors graduate in arranging and conducting of the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. Prior to coming to the United States, she arranged for the Andreyev Orchestra in St. Petersburg, one of the foremost orchestras of Russian folk instruments in the world. Svetlana is a music teacher and a virtuoso domrist. She has a unique ability to work with children and bring out their individual abilities. All of our instructors are experienced professionals. Individual or group lessons can be arranged.
